The committee was impressed by the technological advances that had taken place in the past few years, and focused its recommendations on capturing the tremendous research opportunities seen for the coming decades. S. capabilities in neutron scattering, including diffraction, reflectivity, time-of-flight, and small-angle scattering probes, are being greatly enhanced with the construction and commissioning of the Spallation Neutron Source. The committee’s recommendations are based on strategies to build on these investments and to exploit the capabilities of these new tools to understand properties at the nanoscale and to meet CMMP grand challenges.

The CMMP community must now extend educational efforts not only to improve the scientific literacy of the public at large and of the student populations at all levels, but also to increase the pool of students interested in in-depth study of science and engineering. It is critical to infuse a new generation of scientists with the knowledge, skills, creativity, versatility, and sense of wonder needed to meet the challenges to society in the 21st century. The next generation of CMMP scientists should therefore be exposed to many opportunities for hands-on research experience—for example, through undergraduate research involvement—to stimulate interest and excitement in recent discoveries in CMMP, and they should be exposed to a more interdisciplinary educational experience to allow them to work at the newly emerging research frontiers of science and to utilize CMMP research for societal benefit.
