Participation in communication may mean both understanding and action, but it is visible only as action. In fact, only action demonstrates participation, as understanding is not visible to others (understanding must be shown or demonstrated through action). Consequently, although individuals participate in communication by both acting and understanding, the idea of participation specifically implies that they are active.

In Chapter 14, JungA Uhm, Ferdinand Lewis and Tridib Banerjee present a theoretical exploration of children’s environmental capabilities by incorporating Kevin Lynch’s ideas about the structure of a “good city” into the current discourse on Amartya Sen’s Capability Theory.
