When thoracentesis is undertaken, relief of symptoms may rapidly occur, but fluid reaccumulates quickly, usually within 3 to 4 days. The decision to perform repeated thoracenteses should be tempered by the knowledge that risks include empyema, pneumothorax, trapped lung from inadequate drainage or loculated fluid, and the possibility of increasing malnutrition as a result of the removal of large amounts of protein-rich effusion fluid.
