Any given complex organizational system (such as the local pharmacy in a neighborhood) is part of some larger system (such as a nationwide pharmaceutical chain or the ad hoc pharmaceutical retail system) and also has subsystems as its components (its departments, salesforce, accountants, suppliers, and others).

Moderately and highly complex organizational systems can have many components that contribute, positively or negatively, to organizational change efforts.
