Strictly speaking, this arrangement is not logical, in a syllogistic sense. Rather, each section, member and partition of the text exhibits a kind of non-linear coherence, or (to use Crooke’s term)49 a ‘cleaving’ between narrative parts. In other words, Burton’s Anatomy maintains a cohesion, despite its achronological, illogical structure, precisely because each section or cut in the narrative bears a relation to the overall function of the work: to cure melancholy. Partitions and digressions simply become a way of linking narrative parts that otherwise demonstrate no logical connection.

22 This fact, it seems, was the only thing that could be claimed with confidence, as Paterson’s treatise goes on to survey several decades’ worth of contentious debates about the establishment of a national bank. Within that debate, explained Paterson, many have been concerned that a bank would give too much power to the monarch on the one hand, or too much to a few major lenders on the other. 23 34 Anatomy and the Organization of Knowledge Paterson’s plan offered what seemed to be a reasonable solution.

The Anatomy of Melancholy resembles Vesalian anatomies insofar as Burton’s organization of the topic relies on a physical logic of function, avoiding the difficulties raised by linear syllogistic thinking. Just as the anatomist narrates the structure of the body in a non-linear fashion, digressing frequently as he encounters organs and structures, drawing attention to function and association, Burton progresses in a manner suited to the dissection and demonstration of his topic: melancholy. Strictly speaking, this arrangement is not logical, in a syllogistic sense.
