Sanora’s organizational skills and sensitivity to people proved invaluable to Collins; moreover, she was a talented writer who recorded the refugees’ stories while working alongside them. Collins encouraged Sanora to make field notes.

Moreover, the transitory nature of seasonal field work made it difficult to organize and collect dues. Some newly arrived refugees refused to join. In these early years when union officials were making their way tentatively among farmworkers, they turned down Sanora’s request of organizational help with the walnut pickers. Undaunted she set about organizing a strike, and ultimately the workers’ children were paid. 28 Sanora was not inclined to impose her political views on the refugees. She knew they would make up their own minds in the face of unjust wage scales and unhealthy working conditions.

Their talent as poets attracted the attention of the Garden City Herald’s editor, who hired Sanora to write local news (Sanora had graduated from the junior college in Garden City after a year at the University of Kansas; Dorothy attended Emporia State College). With this experience, together with Associated Press credentials that she had earned in Kansas, Sanora set out for Los Angeles in late summer 1929. Freshly minted as a journalist, Sanora had hopes of landing work with a newspaper. But within a month the stock market went bust; few jobs were available for young female journalists.
