Then, in 1966, he became professor of meteorology at the University of Chicago’s department of geophysical sciences and also the director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric Probing, the joint laboratory of University of Chicago and Illinois Institute of Technology. He was named director of the Atmospheric Technology Division for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, and from 1974 to 1976, he served as senior scientist and director of the NCAR’s National Hail Research Experiment.
In January 1866, he published an article in the North American Review titled “Climatology of the United States (Climatic Influences as bearing on succession and reconstruction)” on his theory of what caused succession by the Southern states before the Civil War.
